Where Does Karate Come From?
Karate come from Japan
In 1933, the Okinawan art of karate was recognized as a Japanese martial art by the Japanese
Martial Arts Committee known as the "Butoku Kai". Until 1935, "karate" was written as "唐手" (Chinese hand).
They decided to call their art "karate" written in Japanese characters as "空手" (empty hand).
Very little is known of the exact origins of karate before it appeared in Okinawa, but one popular theory states that it came from India over a thousand years ago, brought to China by a Buddhist monk called Bodhidarma (“daruma” in Japanese).
The difference between karate and kung fu
"Kung Fu" is a modern term applied to a sect of ancient Chinese martial arts forms.
However, Karate was developed in Japan out of a martial arts practice called "te" involving hand movements.
Karate was then further influenced by Chinese martial arts styles, which explains the connection between the two forms
