How long does it take to become a black belt in karate?
Typical Time. An adult student of karate who attends class two times per week on a regular basis can expect to earn a black belt in about five years. Some very dedicated karate students who train more intensely have been known to earn a black belt in as little as two or three years.
There are about 50 different style and sub styles of Karate. All are different, and may have different belt systems. To reach black belt should not even be on a students mind. Besides no one can tell how well you will do, or how quickly you learn. Even though reaching black belt is a great achievement, it is only the first step. The Asian masters think that when you reach black belt, you are ready to learn. At black belt, you have only learned the basics. It does not mean that you can fight well or even do the basic well.
When I began my training less that 3% of all students ever became a black belt. Today, many schools promote students based on time rather than knowledge and ability. Having a belt without the knowledge and ability equal to that level does you no good.
For what its worth, it took me close to 8 years to reach black belt. Many people I know spent from 5-10 years to get theirs.
that depends on your instructor / dojo / style / organization.
there is no exect time table. generally 3 to 8 years
a black belt means you have an understanding of the basics of techniques and you are ready to begin your training, nothing more then that
It all depends on you and the rules of your dojang. Some TKD schools will have a testing once per quarter and if you are ready to test for the next belt, you do, and if you're not you simply wait for the next test; while others will allow beginners to test in class once they are ready.
I recommend that my students try to come to 2+ classes per week, only attending once a week won't be a problem if you PRACTICE at home.
For the most accurate answer to this question you need to ask your new instructor.
finally:
It varies from school to school. Sadly many McDojo's of the world will try to push students especially kids through every 1-3 months. They basically lower their standards and dumb down the testing so pretty much anyone can level up regardless of skill.
These blackbelt factories aren't selling martial arts training they're selling a fashion accesory. One that will fill your head with false confidence and get your *** kicked up and down the street if you ever have to really use it.
Take your time and learn it the right way.
