While not a common color in the traditional martial arts, some schools choose to add grey belts into their systems just before black belt, to symbolize that the practitioner is a black belt in training.

Other schools choose to use a three belt system, only utilizing white, grey, and black belts.

It is the minimum requirement of all Marines with a training time of 27.5 hours, and has no prerequisites. Recruits receive these belts after completion of a practical application test on all of the basic techniques of the Tan Belt.
Gray belt is the second belt attained after 25 hours of training.
